Oktober 2020 zu seiner letzten Wanderung in den Schwarzwald aufgebrochen, einer Tour, von der er nicht zur\u00fcckkehren wird. Wir haben diesen Ort geschaffen, um gemeinsam an ihn zu denken.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">On October 15, 2020 Dieter left for his last hike in the Black Forest, a walk with no return. Deine legend\u00e4ren Geburtstagsfeten in Reute zur Zwiebelkuchenzeit w\u00e4hrend deiner Studienzeit sind mir noch in bester Erinnerung. Gefeiert wurde oft bis zum Morgengrauen.<br \/>\r\n  Bei unseren Klassentreffen auf dem Gie\u00dfh\u00fcbel, der uns ja schon aus der Schulzeit vertraut war, sorgtest du mit  deiner Gitarre zusammen mit Josef an der Klarinette und Werner an der Posaune f\u00fcr &#039;ne Bombenstimmung.  30<br \/>\r\nJahre nach unserem Abitur erklangen zum ersten Mal wieder die Evergreens von Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong,  Chris Barber usw.  Zum 35. u. 40. Abiturjubil\u00e4um habt ihr uns dieses Vergn\u00fcgen nochmals geboten.  Deine  Band machte ihre ersten Proben unter unserem Musiklehrer Vogt, damals war dein Bruder Hansi am Banjo noch dabei.  <br \/>\r\n  Unser Highlight 2019 war unsere Feier zum 55. Abiturjubil\u00e4um in Chur bei B\u00e4rbel und Werner am Schweizer National-feiertag. Tags darauf genossen wir die spektakul\u00e4re Fahrt nach St. Moritz mit der Rh\u00e4tischen Bahn. Nach dem Abendessen ging ich mit dir noch auf ein Bier in eine urige Kneipe, dort hatten wir  viel Spass mit einheimischen G\u00e4sten.<br \/>\r\nAuch bei unseren viertelj\u00e4hrlichen Treffen im Sch\u00fctzen harrten wir beide oft am l\u00e4ngsten aus, und ich nahm dich dann auf meiner Heimfahrt bis nach Z\u00e4hringen mit. So auch bei unserem letzten Treffen am 26. Febr.  Mehrmals habe ich dich noch angerufen, zuletzt um den 10. And establishing contact with him was very quick; I sent him an e-mail on the last working day before my summer vacation 2018, just before I left my office, and about 3 hours later, when I opened my computer again at home, I had already his first, very interested reply in my inbox. And that very quickly turned into a deeper collaboration.<br \/>\r\n <br \/>\r\nDieter came to Gothenburg for a few days already in September 2018 to discuss scientific matters on site. He was a very kind, open and warm personality who made a great impression on me and my coworkers. Moreover, apart from scientific matters, we also talked quite often about private things, which felt like the beginning of a greater friendship.<br \/>\r\n <br \/>\r\nWe had very intensive contact until the beginning of October this year; around that time he wanted to concentrate on a publication that was about to be submitted. At that time, I was Privatdozent at the University of Basel directed by John Maier and I could not get any further support and lab space there. I decided to choose joining Dieter\u2019s group for the fellowship, because of his worldwide leading expertise in ion trapping, manipulation, cooling, and spectroscopy. With his generous support, I submitted the proposal to DFG, which was funded about one year later. Due to several reasons, my transfer from Basel to Chemnitz with the quadrupole-octopole-quadrupole setup got delayed and eventually I accepted an offer for the professor position at TU Berlin in 2005, where I am since then running my own small group. In that sense, Dieter\u2019s support made it possible for me to survive in Science (which was tough in this time because open positions in Physical Chemistry and Molecular Physics were scarce in Germany), and I am extremely grateful to him for his support. When starting in Berlin, I have received continuous support and advice from him and during at the time of his retirement, I inherited several important parts from his rich device reservoir to build a new setup at TU Berlin composed of an ESI source, a quadrupole, a 22-pole made in Heidelberg, several multipoles, a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and Daly detectors. With these initial parts, we were able to apply for funding to finally construct the BerlinTrap instrument, which is running since a few years productively, although not at the level of highest quality Dieter would expect. Nonetheless, this setup would not exist without his intellectual, mental, and device support and again I am extremely grateful to him for this support. During all my interaction with him, I enjoyed the very fruitful and helpful discussions with him as a mentor and senior colleague, his often critical view - with many suggestions for improving the setup(s) and techniques, his creativity in discussing new projects, and last but not least his friendship. It was so much fun to work together with him in the laboratory over a number of years, and what a stimulating time it was. Dieter was a uniquely talented experimentalist, incredible teacher, and an inspirational role model.  We planned for Dieter to visit Scotland but had to postpone due to travel restrictions. He wrote to me earlier this year that \u201cSometimes, I am still dreaming about scientific discussions with you hiking through the scottish highlands...\u201d. It is not possible to mention Dieter without acknowledging his truly outstanding scientific achievements, including not only the technological developments and improvements that underpin the state-of-the-art experiments carried out in many research groups worldwide today, but also the significant contributions he made to the fields of elementary reaction dynamics, radiative association, new methods for spectroscopy, and nanoparticle mass spectrometry. This rich scientific legacy will last forever. He wrote to me recently that \u201cthere is certainly a bright future for cryogenic traps...\u201d, and due to his influence I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll be proven correct.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nIn the laboratory Dieter was always a lively character to be around, bursting with energy, overflowing with new and creative scientific ideas, entertaining stories, and also from time to time, jokes. In many of my interactions with him he would speak fondly of his time with his children, and also his friends in the black forest. He was a generous, open, and kind character. I have yet to come across another human possessing anything close to his stamina. Together with his passion and drive, these were infectious characteristics. I would like to pay tribute to another of his great talents: mentoring. The inspiration, encouragement, advice and support that he gave to me as a young researcher has been hugely influential and is something I will always be grateful for. Since our first encounter in 2013, he has been a wonderful companion on my journey, not only as a collaborator but also a friend. There are few people in the world I hold in as high esteem.  No doubt like so many others, Dieter enriched my life, and I will miss him dearly. It is painful to adjust to the reality that he is no longer here, and also difficult to put into words what he meant to me. Oktober verstarb v\u00f6llig \u00fcberraschend Dieter Gerlich auf einer Wanderung im Schwarzwald. Seine Leidenschaft war die Wissenschaft. Sein Lebenswerk galt den Experimenten zur Untersuchung molekularer St\u00f6\u00dfe. Sein wissenschaftliches Leben nahm auch nach seiner Emeritierung im Jahr 2009 weiter Fahrt auf. Sein Tod kam pl\u00f6tzlich und beendete unvermittelt sein gro\u00dfes wissenschaftliches Wirken.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nDieter Gerlich wurde am 29. September 1944 in Eichenbr\u00fcck (heutiges W\u0105growiec, Polen) geboren. Im Januar 1945 floh die Familie nach Leipzig, wo seine Gro\u00dfmutter v\u00e4terlicherseits wohnte. 1947 siedelte die Familie zun\u00e4chst nach Braunlage, 1952 nach Badenweiler und schlie\u00dflich 1959 nach Freiburg im Breisgau um. Hier legte Dieter 1964 das Abitur ab und nahm nach dem Milit\u00e4rdienst in Strub, Berchtesgarden, das Studium der Physik und Mathematik in Freiburg auf. Dieter war ein begeisterter Bastler und T\u00fcftler und so schraubte er nicht nur an seinen Autos, sondern baute auch bald die ersten Experimente in der Arbeitsgruppe von Christoph Schlier. Zusammen mit seinem Betreuer Ernst Teloy baute er den ersten Oktopol Ionenleiter auf. Diese bahnbrechende Entwicklung sollte ihn sein ganzes wissenschaftliches Leben begleiten und f\u00fcr viele Wissenschaftler weltweit eine gro\u00dfe Bereicherung werden.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nZun\u00e4chst untersuchte Dieter Gerlich in seiner Promotion Einzelst\u00f6\u00dfe zwischen Protonen und dem Wasserstoffmolek\u00fcl in einer Kreuzstrahlapparatur, die er ebenfalls aufbaute. Hierbei stehen elastische, inelastische und reaktive Prozesse in Konkurrenz. Durch systematische Untersuchungen mit Isotopologen (H2, HD, D2) konnten diese Prozesse voneinander unterschieden werden. Ebenso stellte sich die Frage, ob der Sto\u00df \u00fcber einen Zwischenkomplex (formal H3+) abl\u00e4uft. Seine experimentellen Arbeiten begleitete er durch Phasenraumberechnungen der m\u00f6glichen quantenmechanischen Zust\u00e4nde des Sto\u00dfsystems. Durch Abz\u00e4hlen der energetisch und gem\u00e4\u00df der Dreimpulserhaltung erlaubten Zust\u00e4nde wurden so Reaktionswahrscheinlichkeiten berechnet. Diese Untersuchungen stellen auch heute noch einen Meilenstein im Verst\u00e4ndnis dieses elementaren Sto\u00dfprozesses dar. Der Sto\u00df H+ + H2 besch\u00e4ftigte ihn bis heute. So hat er in Zusammenarbeit mit Kollegen am Max-Planck-Institut f\u00fcr extraterrestrische Physik in Garching ein Ionenspeicherexperiment aufgebaut, um die Ortho zu Para Umwandlung des molekularen Wasserstoffs in H+ + H2 St\u00f6\u00dfen bei geringen Sto\u00dfenergien, also Bedingungen wie sie in interstellaren Molek\u00fclwolken herrschen, zu verstehen.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nAusgehend von dieser Forschung bildeten Fragen nach der Bildung und dem Zerfall von Molek\u00fclen nach seiner Promotion den Kern seiner wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten. Als Experimentator interessierte ihn aber zuerst die Frage, mit welchen Experimenten die gew\u00fcnschte Information gewonnen werden kann. Die Umsetzung dieser Ideen in einzigartige Apparaturen war die zentrale Motivation, die sich durch das wissenschaftliche Leben von Dieter Gerlich zog. In dem von ihm entwickelten Oktopol Ionenleiter werden integrale und differentielle Wirkungsquerschnitte f\u00fcr entsprechende Sto\u00dfsysteme ermittelt. Diese sogenannte Guided Ion Beam (GIB) Technologie installierte er als Postdoktorand auch in der Arbeitsgruppe des sp\u00e4teren Nobelpreistr\u00e4gers Yuan-Tse Lee (UC Berkeley) in den Jahren 1978\/1979 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Doktoranden Scott Anderson, mit dem ihn eine lebenslange Zusammenarbeit und Freundschaft verband. Aus dieser Zeit sind zahlreiche Publikationen zu sehr detailreichen Sto\u00dfuntersuchungen erschienen. Freunde und Konkurrenten weltweit griffen die Technologie auf und so etablierten sich GIB-Instrumente als Standardwerkzeug in zahlreichen Labors weltweit. Oktopol-Ionenleiter finden sich seit langer Zeit auch in kommerziellen Massenspektrometern. Hier wird die sto\u00dfinduzierte Dissoziation (CID) dazu verwendet, gro\u00dfe Molek\u00fcle in kleinere, stabilere Einheiten zu zerbrechen und so auf die Struktur der urspr\u00fcnglichen Molek\u00fcle zur\u00fcckzuschlie\u00dfen.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nNeben der Weiterentwicklung von GIB Instrumenten machte sich Dieter Gerlich die Speicherung von Ionen in inhomogenen elektrischen RF Feldern zu Nutze, um St\u00f6\u00dfe zwischen Ionen und Molek\u00fclen bei thermischen Energien zu untersuchen. Produkte von reaktiven St\u00f6\u00dfen werden in einem nachgeschalteten Massenspektrometer analysiert und aus ihrer H\u00e4ufigkeit Raten, oder besser gesagt Ratenkoeffizienten, der Reaktionen bestimmt. Die Verwendung von Multipolen h\u00f6herer Ordnung als Quadrupole erlaubt eine effiziente Puffergask\u00fchlung, so dass Ionen auf Temperaturen bis zu einigen Kelvin gek\u00fchlt werden k\u00f6nnen. Damit werden Bedingungen wie in kalten interstellaren Molek\u00fclwolken erreicht. Daher haben sich die von Dieter Gerlich entwickelten Ionenspeicher als ideale Instrumente zur Simulation der kalten interstellaren Ionenchemie entwickelt. Ebenso wie bei der Entwicklung der GIB Technologie griffen viele Labors weltweit die technische Entwicklung auf. Heute bilden diese Experimente ebenso einen weltweiten Standard.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nBereits 1992 ver\u00f6ffentlichte Dieter Gerlich einen \u00dcbersichtsartikel, in dem er erstmals diese Art der Speicherung detailliert beschrieb und auch bereits zahlreiche Beispiele f\u00fcr Untersuchungen zusammenfasste. Wegen der sehr grundlegenden und ausf\u00fchrlichen Beschreibungen wurde der Artikel von seinen Doktoranden und auch von Kollegen als \u201eBibel\u201c bezeichnet, denn hier erl\u00e4utert Dieter die technischen Grundlagen der RF Speicherung, die jeder beherrschen sollte, der Experimente in solchen Speichern durchf\u00fchren m\u00f6chte. Ebenso werden in diesem Werk bereits zahlreiche experimentelle M\u00f6glichkeiten diskutiert, die selbst heute z.T. noch auf Ihre praktische Durchf\u00fchrung warten.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nEin Hochpunkt der Experimentierkunst wurde in Dieters Labor bereits in den 1990er Jahren in Freiburg erreicht. In einer sogenannten Merged Beam Apparatur \u00fcberlagerte er gef\u00fchrte Ionen mit einem Molekularstrahl und konnte durch die pr\u00e4zise Einstellung der Ionenenergie Einzelst\u00f6\u00dfe bei Energien bis herab in den meV Bereich untersuchen. So konnte die ebenfalls elementare Reaktion von Stickstoffionen, N+, mit Wasserstoff in einem bis dato unerreichten Detail studiert werden. Die Bildung von NH+ in N+ + H2 St\u00f6\u00dfen ist der ratenbestimmende Schritt in der Bildung interstellaren Ammoniaks (NH3) und daher kommt diesen und weiteren Untersuchungen eine wichtige Bedeutung des Verst\u00e4ndnisses der Bildung interstellarer Molek\u00fcle zu. Hier hat Dieter Gerlich Pionierarbeit geleistet und das Gebiet der Laborastrophysik ganz wesentlich mitbegr\u00fcndet und gestaltet.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nEbenso fundamental wichtig war die Untersuchung der sogenannten Strahlungsassoziation in Tieftemperaturspeichern. Das wichtigste Beispiel aus dieser Serie von Untersuchungen betrifft die Bildung von CH2+ in St\u00f6\u00dfen mit dem im interstellaren Medium omnipr\u00e4senten molekularen Wasserstoff. Die Reaktion C+ + H2 =&gt; CH2+ + h n, kann demnach nur stattfinden, wenn die im Sto\u00df \u00fcbersch\u00fcssige Energie \u00fcber die Aussendung eines Photons (E = h n) gew\u00e4hrleistet wird. Dieser Prozess ist sehr unwahrscheinlich, wenn man die Lebensdauer zum Aussenden des Photons (~ms) mit der Dauer des Sto\u00dfprozesses ( 0 \u00dcbergang im H2 normalerweise aufgrund des Pauli Prinzips nicht m\u00f6glich sein sollte, aber eben in einem Sto\u00df dreier identischer Fermionen schon\u2026<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nDieter war immer voller Ideen und voll des Geistes neue Instrumente aufzubauen, die Experimente erlauben, die aktuell noch unm\u00f6glich scheinen. Das war sein Lebenselixir, sein Antrieb, seine Motivation. Im September wurde er 76 Jahre alt. Dies hielt ihn nicht davon ab, neue Zusammenarbeiten mir der Gruppe von Paola Caselli (Max-Planck-Institut f\u00fcr Extraterrestrische Physik) oder mit der Gruppe von Manfred Kappes (KIT, Karlsruhe) zu starten. Sein Tod riss ihn aus diesen Aktivit\u00e4ten, zu fr\u00fch und v\u00f6llig unerwartet.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nDieter war nicht nur der au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnliche Wissenschaftler, er war auch der Gef\u00e4hrte und Freund, mit dem man gemeinsam den Schwarzwald erwandern konnte oder bei einem Bier am Lagerfeuer sa\u00df. Ich erinnere eine Wanderung zum Gornergrat in den Schweizer Alpen wo wir die Zukunft der Ionenphysik einmal mehr in allen Details besprachen. Wandern, \u00dcbernachtungen in einer einfachen Herberge, hei\u00dfe Diskussionen bei einem kalten Bier, das macht vielleicht die Wunderformel des erf\u00fcllten Lebens unseres Freundes und Wegbereiters Dieter Gerlich aus. He had kindly invited me to Chemnitz for a few months, to give me an opportunity to decide if I would like to join his group for a joint PhD thesis after my duties were done. I have to say that I remember being very impressed by all the different set-ups developed in his group, and by his spectacular hair! The warm atmosphere which was floating in his group is what convinced me to become a member of his group. I remember Dieter as a very brilliant experimentalist, who knew each technical detail of the experiment. I was impressed by the degree of automatization and level of computer control already reached at that time of the experiments. I remember once, I tried to throw away a coupling box, because it was not working anymore: he saw it and asked me if I was sure that it could not be fixed. \u201cYou know, I made it myself and it was optimized for LUMAP\u201d, he told me. Then I realized all his work and his attachment to the machine I was using with Raquel, another PhD student. He was passionate, and it was always impressive, as a PhD student, when you had a scientific discussion with him. But Dieter was more than an excellent scientist. The memories of a group party near a lake return, when he took his guitar and started to play it and sing. It was then that I understood his spectacular hair\u2026.in fact my supervisor was a rock star, who decided to excel in science. In particular, it is officially associated with SOLEIL, the french synchrotron, and in the spirit of Dieter, open to all the community to help european scientists (and beyond) to access to very specific ion-molecule reaction studies. More personally, Dieter has always been for me the model of rigor and precision to follow. At that time, Scott Anderson initiated me to this powerful technique developed by Dieter \u2026 and E. Teloy, as he never forgot to say it himself.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nAs soon as I came back in Europe, I had the chance to meet Dieter for the first time in a conference in Freiburg and the collaboration started that day. It lasted for more than 15 years\u2026 With the financial help of one of the first European contracts, the apparatus CERISES was built in Orsay, associating an octopole ion guide built by Dieter and the Synchrotron radiation ion source with the electron ion coincidence method developed in Orsay by Paul Marie Guyon. This long term collaboration with our team, in particular Christian Alcaraz and later Roland Thissen, produced a lot of exchanges of students and allowed Dieter to get the prestigious Humboldt price for German French scientific collaborations.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nAll along those years, the scientific discussions were rich, passionate sometimes, as Dieter was an inventive, rigorous, enthusiastic scientist, who always wanted to obtain the best from the experimental devices that he built and that he could \u201cfeel\u201d when something was going wrong. But he had also a rich human personality, fond of old music instruments that he was renovating and one day we discovered that he could use very well a sewing machine! He explained that when the family fled from East Germany towards the West, their only valuable belongings was a sewing machine and he learned as a child to repair and use it to help his mother.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nHe will always live in our minds and the huge number of experimental devices that he constructed or generously helped others to build will remind the young scientists that this is the heritage of an exceptional scientist. Cet objectif est apparu tr\u00e8s<br \/>\nrapidement tout \u00e0 fait appropri\u00e9 pour son application \u00e0 l\u2019environnement<br \/>\ninterstellaire tr\u00e8s en dehors de l\u2019\u00e9quilibre thermodynamique et o\u00f9 les<br \/>\nr\u00e9actions ion-mol\u00e9cule jouent un r\u00f4le important.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nEntre temps, il avait obtenu un poste de professeur \u00e0 Chemnitz<br \/>\n (anciennement Karl Marx Stadt) en 1994, o\u00f9 il avait d\u00e9m\u00e9nag\u00e9 son pi\u00e8ge<br \/>\n\u00e0 ions et o\u00f9 il essayait de monter un nouveau groupe. Dieter a<br \/>\nnaturellement \u00e9t\u00e9 un membre actif et influent du r\u00e9seau europ\u00e9en \u00ab<br \/>\nAstrochemistry \u00bb, pilot\u00e9 par Ian Smith de Birmingham qui incluait les<br \/>\ngroupes d\u2019exp\u00e9rimentateurs de Birmingham, Bordeaux, Chemnitz, Perrugia,<br \/>\nRennes, de chimistes th\u00e9oriciens (Bordeaux, G\u00f6ttingen) et les<br \/>\nastrophysiciens de Manchester et Meudon. Il a imm\u00e9diatement r\u00e9pondu<br \/>\npr\u00e9sent quand, au nom de la communaut\u00e9 PCMI, en construction, nous<br \/>\nl\u2019avons contact\u00e9 pour participer \u00e0 l\u2019analyse et la s\u00e9lection des<br \/>\nprojets exp\u00e9rimentaux au programme de l\u2019\u00e9poque. Sa contribution \u00e0<br \/>\nl\u2019\u00e9valuation de tr\u00e8s nombreux projets, entre les ann\u00e9es 1996 et 2000,<br \/>\nfut importante et remarquable.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nPlusieurs d\u2019entre nous ont eu l\u2019occasion de lui rendre visite \u00e0<br \/>\nl\u2019occasion de rencontres qu\u2019il organisait o\u00f9 les activit\u00e9s de<br \/>\nrandonn\u00e9es dans les for\u00eats de Saxe et de discussions joyeuses autour<br \/>\nd\u2019une bi\u00e8re bien fraiche accompagnaient les s\u00e9ances de travail et les<br \/>\ndiscussions scientifiques. Tr\u00e8s proche de la communaut\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise (il<br \/>\naimait bien parler fran\u00e7ais) dont il a suivi et accompagn\u00e9 certains<br \/>\nd\u00e9veloppements instrumentaux, il a \u00e9galement eu l\u2019occasion d\u2019exporter<br \/>\nson savoir-faire dans diff\u00e9rents laboratoires, \u00e0 B\u00e2le, Cologne, Tucson,<br \/>\nPrague, Salt Lake City, Novisad\u2026 Tr\u00e8s r\u00e9cemment encore, il s\u2019\u00e9tait<br \/>\nengag\u00e9 dans une nouvelle exp\u00e9rience au Max Planck f\u00fcr Extraterrestische<br \/>\nPhysik \u00e0 Munich.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nSon expertise et son leadership dans l\u2019\u00e9tude de la r\u00e9activit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9tat \u00e0<br \/>\n\u00e9tat et la spectroscopie des ions mol\u00e9culaires \u00e0 basse temp\u00e9rature ont<br \/>\npermis des avanc\u00e9es majeures en astrophysique de laboratoire. De plus,<br \/>\nsa proximit\u00e9 avec la communaut\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise lui a valu le prix<br \/>\nGay-Lussac-Humboldt en 1996, concr\u00e9tisant l\u2018importance de ce champ de<br \/>\nrecherches.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nTous ceux qui l\u2019ont c\u00f4toy\u00e9 ont pu appr\u00e9cier sa cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9, son<br \/>\nenthousiasme, sa disponibilit\u00e9, sa g\u00e9n\u00e9rosit\u00e9 \u00e0 partager ses id\u00e9es et<br \/>\ndonner des conseils toujours bienveillants et avis\u00e9s. He was a great colleague and a wonderful friend. Dieter was a dedicated scientist, interested in the characterization of molecular ions and the development of new experimental techniques. During his time In Chemnitz and my time in Jena we worked closely together and established a joint DFG research group in the field of laboratory astrophysics. I even tried to set up a new Max Planck Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics and received great support from Dieter. Although this project failed we succeeded to build a network of laboratory astrophysics groups in Germany. I always remember our discussions ranging from the H3+ molecule to the structure of nanoparticles. We all will miss Dieter, his smile and dedication. I personally knew Dieter only since 3 years, from a collaborative project with Stephan Schlemmer in Cologne. I met him several times in Cologne and in Nijmegen, my home university. I was very much impressed with his enthusiasm for science, and for building new instruments to perform the most advanced experimental studies. He spent much time and efforts to help several younger colleagues to set up their own instruments. I much appreciated his cordiality and openness during our meetings, which we usually ended by having a meal and drinking beer together.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nIn understand that you will miss him, especially since he died so unexpectedly and full of life.
